'OPERATION SUKKOT 5772'
Dear Friends:
As Rosh Hashanah approaches, and our concern for our brothers and sisters in Israel continues to grow, we wonder if there is anything tangible we can do to reach out help those who defend our beloved Israel on the front lines.
In addition, I know that each of us is praying diligently for a refuah shleimah for Meira Riemer, חיה מאירה מינדל בת חוה גולדא. One of the most important mitzvoth that we can perform for the merit of one in need of a refuah is tzedakah, as our Sages teach us: צדקה תציל ממוות, "Charity has the power to save lives" and as we recite on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, ותשובה, ותפילה, וצדקה מעבירין את רוע הגזירה, Repentance, Prayer, and Charity can remove the evil of the decree.
Here is a beautiful and tangible tzedakah opportunity that can not only be a zchut for those in need, but can help provide even more mitzvoth opportunities for soldiers in the IDF. The following note was written by a colleague of mine, Lt. Colonel (res.) Rabbi Yedidya Atlas, IDF Ground Forces Command (res), and Head of Special Operations for the IDF Chief Rabbinate.
"Given the impending threat of serious unrest this September, the IDF is fulfilling its task of being prepared for any eventuality. Hence, the Holiday needs for combat soldiers in the field are greatly expanded due to the planned influx of troops in certain areas. Being prepared means both physically and spiritually / religiously - especially when these troops will be on the frontlines during the Chagim rather than many of them being at home with their families, had the period been a quieter one. A key need is Sukkot on the company (pluga) level in the field."
IDF Operation Sukkot 5772 is an effort to raise money to fund these portable Sukkot for the IDF, so as to provide the opportunity for as many IDF soldiers as possible to take advantage of the mitzvah. Projects such as these go beyond the defense budget of Israel, and hence are shared with the broader community of Israel.
The cost to the IDF for each 3x2 meter Sukkah is $620. If you would like to help in this mitzvah, especially in the zchut of a refuah shleimah for Chaya Meira Mindle bas Chava Golda, please send any donations care of "The Rabbi's Discretionary Fund", and mark it ('memo') for Operation Sukkot 5772.
In the spirit of our Rosh Hashanah prayers, may all our efforts of teshuva, tefilah, and tzedakah bring a refuah to all those in need of one.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Shulman
